PROPOSED SCHOLARSHIPS.
TRUST LA,ND6 TRUST DISCUSSION EDUCMTWN COMMITTEE TO •REIPOR.T. Considerable diacussien took place at a meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last evening regarding the setting of a .Trust Scholarship. While a matriculation grant was under consideration, Mr. E. G. Eton, ?n expressing disapproval of tho present system of matriculation grants, said he thought that a scheme should be instituted whereby the Trust should give a scholarship. Mr. J. L.. Hughes moved that the Education Committee bring down a scholarship scheme in connection with the secondary schools of Masterton. Mr. J. M. Coradine said it appeared to him that matriculation, grants were not on a satisfactory basis. He thought that the Education Committee should review the whole position and see if it were feasible to establish one or two scholarships. Many objected to matriculation. as one of the standards of educational fest.
Mr. W. H. Jackson asked <m what basis could a Trust Scholarship be founded? The present system of examinations was the best they had. In his opinion the Trust should have a scholarship fund of a large sum to fall back upon. Mr. E. G. Eton was of the opinion that the matriculation examination would soon go by the boards and the time would soon come when the Trust would have to abolish matriculation grants. He supported Mr. Coradine’s proposal. Mr. Jackson reiterated that the present basis of matriculation would be re-cast. Mr. Coradine was of the opinion that to pass matriculation did not indicate brilliance. They wanted some examination where they could pick a brilliant boy. Mr. R. Krahagen, speaking personally, said that he did not think the Trust competent to formulate a scholarship scheme. He suggested that two or three educational experts should be consulted in the matter. Mr. Jackson maintained that the Trust had a scholarship scheme. The grants were awarded on tho results of the examinations of the Education Department and of tho University. If they founded a scholarship it should be for research work. Mr. Eton suggested that the matter could be quickly solved by granting £5O to the dux off each school, provided they continued their course at the University. After further discussion, Mr. Hughes’s motion was agreed to.
