THE GALAVA DISASTER.
PROBABLE CAUSE. PLATE DRIVEN OUT BY COAL. SYDNEY, February 10. A revised list of the missing from the steamer Galava, which turned turtle off the Now South Wales coast, is now as follows:—J. Hansen, Benjamin Gilkes, A. Brown and Pietro Spagnolo. The cause of the disaster is a mystery, but significance is attached to* the statements of survivors that -the engineroom, which was aft. was quite dry while the forepart of the vessel was filling rapidly. Members of the crew hurriedly examined the hatches and found that water had entered there. The consensus of opinion is that one of the plates in the forepart became detached through the weight of coal, allowing water to* flood the ship. Alost of the crew managed to dive from the side, but it is feared that the missing were drawn under when the vc ssel di sappea red.—(P. A.)
