SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special). The first race of the season under the auspices of the Carterton Amateur Swimming, Club was held at the baths on Wednesday evening, and resulted:— fi. B. Ward (7sec) 1, D. Irwin (Ssec) 2, 11. King (4sec) 3, L. Sorensen (2sec) 4. Bowling. The Greytown Bowling Club’s champion singlew has been wen by A. Gregor who will represent the club'in the Centre competiton. He also wins the handicap singles, together with the trophies preaented by M.-srs. H. G. Carter and B. G. Vile, and the Bussell gold medal. Accidents. A. Native named Joseph Akura, of Gladstone, was driving his car home yesterday from Carterton when a collision occurred with another ear travelling in the opposite direction. Akura’s car capsized, pinning Akura to Mie ground, where he lay for some time until a passer-by noticed his position, and released him, fortunately, not much injured. The car was considerably damaged. It is alleged that the driver of the ear responsible for the accident drove isn without stopping. Tbe matter is being investigated. While cranking a car on Wednesday afternoon, Boland Thompson, son of Mr B. G. Thompson, of Featherston, had the misfsrtune to fracture an arm. Personal. Mr. J. Anderson, telegraph line foreman, Featherston, has loft for Christchurch, to take charge of a construction gang engaged in building the new metallic telephone lines between Christchurch and Blenheim. Mr. H. G. Herd will be acting foreman during Mr. Anderson *8 absence. Automobile Association. The Wairarapa Automobile Association met at Greytown on Wednesday evening, Mr. W. Howard Booth presiding. The treasurer reported bank credit £22 13s 9d and P. 0.8.8. £336 16s 3d. Accounts totalling £6 7s 6d were passed for payment. Eight new members were elected. A remit is to be forwarded to the North Island Motor Union, “that the Government be urged to appoint a motor patrol for the Wellington district. 0 A remit is also to be forwarded dealing with pedestrian control in municipalities. The Wairarapa South County Council thanked the association for their contribution of £lO towards the bridge on Moreton Road. It was decided to write the Ekctahuna Borough Council congratulating them upon, their camping ground. Two bond** signs are to bo erected at Hog* ley’s Corner. Mr. J. C. Murray is to be asked if he will cut the hedge and •trees on his property to give better visibility at the corner Of Opaki and Third Streets. In a case where a motor lorry had obstructed a motor car on Kokotau Road, the owners of tho lorry are to be warned that if the same thing happened again the association would take action. The Masterton Borough Council is to be asked to exercise better control of pedestrians on motor highways and a copy of tho request is to be sent to all borough councils in the Wairarapa. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special). A match foy the Grady Medals was played on the local bowling green on Tuesday, when the challengers, Roach and Vile, of Grey town, lost to Sinclair and Rolls, tho holders, the score being 24/16. Two good games were also played in the finals for the singles championship. In the first game Rea lost to Rolls, 20/18. The game between Sinclair and Rolls stood even on the 10th and 12th head. On tho 17th head the score was 18/14, with a draw on the 21st, and three on the extra head, Sinclair winning by 3 points. There was a very good attendance at a meeting held in the school on Wednesday night, Miss Card presiding, when a ladies’ committee was formed to arrange for the serving of luncheon and afternoon tea at the sports meeting on February 19. Many willing offers of help were received, and the success of the occasion, provided the weather is fine, is assured.
