VERDICT IN MERRETT MURDER CASH. ACCUSED GUILTY OF FORGERY. LONDON, February 8. In the trial of tho New Zealander, John Donald Merrctt, aged 19, on a charge of murdering his mother, Mrs. Bertha Merrett, on March 17, 1926, by shooting her in her flat at Edinburgh, the jury returned a verdict that the charge of murder was not proven. The accused was found guilty of forging cheques and was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. Lord Alness, in summing up, pointed out that the deceased’s depositions were not taken. The precision desirable in a murder trial was entirely lacking. —(A. and N.Z.).
