MOTOR SPEEDING.
WORLD RECORD SMASHED. BRITISH TRIUMPH. LONDON, February 4. Malcolm Campbell, in his special “Bluebird” racing car, smashed the world’s speed record on Pendine Sands in South Wales, with a mean average speed over 174 miles an hour. His times were: One kilometre in 12.791 seconds, or 174.843 miles an hour; one mile in 20.663 seconds, or 174.224 miles an hour. Campbell’s achievement is regarded as a magnificent triumph for British motoring. The 4 ‘Bluebird” is British entirely, whereas Parry Thomas’s car. in which the previous record was established, has an American engine. When he finished, Campbell had almost to be lifted from the car. The terrific wind pressur blew off his goggles. He said that as the flag-posts flashed by they were just a blur.—(A. and N.Z.).
