Thomas Hogan, 2G, died in the Wanganui Hospital yesterday as a result of being knocked down by a car driven, by G. Tlavell. The car was going at a slow pace when deceased who was mentally and physically infirm, stepped in front of it.—(P.A.) The opening of the new Christian Brothers Roman Catholic College of St. M’ary’js took place at Oamaru yesterday. The new college is a palatial edifice surrounded by beautiful grounds, and until acquired by a syndicate for the Christian Brothers was well known as the Redcastle Estate. Addresses were delivered by Archbishop Redwood, Bishops Whyte and Liston, and Mr. F. Milner, headmaster of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, Councillor W. H. Frith, and Mr. B. Collan (Dunedin). -(P.A.). Speaking at Oamaru yesterday Archbishop Bedwood congratulated the Christian Brothers on their eminent success as teachers, not only in the Dominion but in Australia and other lands. Ho said that the educated Catholics’ idea of what education ought to be was in part as follows: u Against the growing evils of violence, divorce, juvenile crime, desecration of the home, the degradation of the theatre and the lowering of all standards of womanly modesty and decoruny—(P.A.). Mr. David Smith elsewhere asks sportsmen and picnickers to refrain from burning gorse on the Waingawa River adjoining his property on account of the danger of grass tires. The Duchess of York set the fashion at Home in real Alaska gold seal furs, and she is reported to be bringing a number of these out to New Zealand with her. Madame Menere has been fortunate enough to secure a quantity of real Alaska gold seal and these she will be displaying on her approaching Dominion tour, commencing at Invercargill next month.*
