THE MERRETT TRIAL.
SUICIDE THEORY ADVANCED. VIEW OF EXPERTS. (Received Friday, 8.40 p.m.). LONDON, February 4. At tho trial of Donald Morrett, tho New Zealander, for the alleged murder of his mother, Walter Penn, the deceased ’s brother-in-law, said Donald told Mrs. Penn, “I did not do it, but I Will confess if you like." Witness did not take this seriously.
Nurse Grant gave evidence that s?ie overheard a conversation at tho hospital. Mrs. Penn told Mrs. Merrett that she must have fallen. Mrs. Merrett replied, “No, it was an extraordinary thing. I heard an explosion. Did not Donald do it? He is such a naughty boy. ’ ’
Elizabeth Christie, dancing instructress, whom Donald sometimes took out, gave evidence that Donald said his mother shot herself, possibly accidentally.
Experts testified that suicide was improbable.—(A. and N.Z.).
