SUPPORT BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. FOR SECOND CARNIVAL. The Masterton Amateur Swimming Club applied to the Council last evening for the council to forego its just claim of 50 per cent, of the net proceeds of the club’s second night carnival to be held in the Dixon Street baths on Tuesday, Febuary 22. It was stated that a party of twelve swimmers from Wellington would compete on the condition that the club paid to the Wellington Centre 50 per cent, of the net proceeds to cover their travelling expenses. The club also asked for permission to erect further seating accommodation at the baths at its own expense.
Cr. J. B. Rue, who moved that the request be granted, stated that the council’s policy was to help those who helped themselves. The club had worked hard and had done everything possible to popularise the sport. He also suggested that the council should convey to the club its appreciation of the manner in which its members were controlling the baths during the evening sessions. The motion was seconded by Cr. W. Kemp and carried.
