(‘‘The Age” Special.

The death occurred at Greytown on Wednesday of Mr. William Lyster, at the age of 66 years. Deceased had been in failing health for some time. He leaves a widow and five sons and two daughters. Bowling.

In the champion of champion pairs on the Carterton bowling green on Wednesday evening, G. Hart and H. Hall defeated E. Smith and A. J. Parton, 21/17. Cricket. The Carterton Municipal Band rendered a programme of music in Carrington Park on Wednesday evening to an appreciative audience. Swimming Club. At the annual meet'ng of the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club, the following officers were elected.’—Patron, Mr. J. Udy; president, Mr. A. J. Parton; viee-|resideais, Messrs. J. S. Connoil, W. It was decided to hold a5O yards race on Wednesday evening, and a 100 yards race on Monday evening. Ladies’ races will be held if sufficient inducement offers. Messrs. Adams and Sorensen were appointed secretaries for a carnival to be arranged. It was decided to make arrangements for a visit from the two New Zealand lady swimmers touring the Dominion.

PIRINOA.

Mrs. Waddell, of Invercargill, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. W. Hume, Raho Burn. Mrs. Wilson is also staying with Mrs Hume. Mrs. Geo. Hume, of Tauanui, who has been away from the district for some time, has returned and is staying at the Lake Ferry, pending the erection of the new homestead at Tauanui.

Quite a large number of people have been staying at Lake Ferry. Visitors from all parts of the North Island, who have been staying there during tho holidays, have returned to their homey. Fish are very plentiful at the Lake Ferry and several large catches have been made. Shoals of kahawai can be seen every day. flounders are not being caught in as large numbers as hitherto.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mann, formerly of the Valley, but now of Wellington, have been visiting friends and have returned home.

The local school re-opened on Tuesday, and judging by the first day’s attendance the year promises to be a successful one.

It is proposed that the Pirinoa and Tuhitarata schools should hold a combined picnic and the suggestion will no doubt meet with the approval of all residents.

A narrow escape from serious injury befel Mr. Tama Ahipene a few days ago, when by some unaccountable means the milking shed caught fire. At the time, Mr. Ahipene had just commenced milking and in attempting to arrest the flames he was considerably burnt about the arms and face. Luckily the flames were extinguished without any serious damage, other than tho injury caused to Mr. Ahipene. The station of the late Iraia I? Whaiti at Kawa Kawa, which is on the market, is situated some 18 miles from Pirinoa, and contains some beautiful country. It is understood that a syndicate is being formed to acquire the property.

Some successful ‘‘burns” of recently felled bush country have been made in these parts.

Mrs. W. Harris, who has been in indifferent health for some considerable time is staying with her daughter in Masterton.
