BUILDING CONTROL.

WOODEN STRUCTURE MOVED IN BRICK AREA.

THE OFFICIAL STANDPOINT.

As there have been some comments upon the removal of a two-storey wooden building from a. site in Queen Street to the rear of the same Section, facing Chapel Street, and next door to tho new Masonic Temple, an “Age” representative yesterday waited on the Mayor and Borough Engineer for a statement of the Borough’s view of the matter. It was stated that when the owner of the property made application to the council for permission to remove tho building, the opinion of the Engineer was sought, and from that officer it was learned that, though the site is within the brick area, the owner was quite within his legal rights in removing tho structure from one position on the site to another, providing that the work was 'performed to the satisfaction of the Engineer and that tho by-laws were complied with in regard to sanitation and structural renovations.

Though objections have been raised by owners of adjoining property that the erection of this wooden structure close to the roadline in Chapel Street is opposed to the principles of town planning, it is state*!, that the matter is entirely a matter for arrangement between the parties, the civic authorities having no power to intervene as long as the terms of the by-laws are complied with. The Mayor stated that there was nothing in the newly consolidated borough by-laws preventing the re-erection of the building on another site on the same section. The building had been erected before the constitution of tho brick area, and could remain there as •long as it was kept in repair up to the standards required by the Sanitary Inspector.
