YOUNG MEN’S ESCAPADE.

BREWER AND CURTIS BEFORE COURT.

HAMILTON, February 2.

Two young men, George Huia Brewer and George Curtis, who recently made a sensational escape from gaol at Hamilton, where they were remanded on a charge of theft, appeared at the Police Court this morning. Brewer pleaded guilty to the theft of an Essex car from Ohaupo and Curtis and Brewer to the theft of a Ford car from Hamilton. On these charges they were committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence. On. a charge of being incorrigible rogues in that they escaped from prison, Curtis and Brewer pleaded guilty and were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, to run concurrently with the sentences they are serving.

The Magistrate suggested that when the accused appeared for sentence on the other charges at Wellington, a recommendation be made to the Judge that they be confined in different prisons.

On a charge of converting a car to his own use, Curtis pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment in Wellington gaol. E. A. Peterson, Brewer and Curtis were remanded to appear at To Kuiti to-morrow to answer charges of stealing large quantities of clothing and goods valued at £7B, belonging to the Piopio branch of the Farmers’ Trading Company.—(P.A.)
