Mrs. John Strang and Miss M. Strang have returned from their trip abroad and. are staying at Glcnside, Gladstone.
Weekly Athletic Meeting. The weekly races of the Carterton Amateur Athletic Club resulted as follows: One mile cycle race (boys).— Burgess 1, Hall 2, Gayfer 3. 75 yards handicap.—Goodin 1, Burgess 2, Hart 3. Time, 8 2-ssecs. Half-mile cycle race.—Booth 1, Anderson 2, Udy 3. One mile handicap.—Hurley 1, Hart 2, Burling 3. Time, 4mins. 51 3-ssecs. Half-mile walk (boys).—lrwin 1, Wilkins 2, Feast 3. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special). Rain fell on four days during the month of January, the total for the month being .82 inches., The heaviest fall was on the 13th, when .50 inches fell. The vital statistics for the month of January were: Births, 4; marriages, 0; deaths, 0. The Featherston School reopened on Tuesday after six weeks’ vacation. Forty pupils are enrolled in the High School. Miss Goodwin has been appointed to relieve Miss Patterson for six months and will take up her position on Thursday. Misses Cullen, Burbush, McDonald, McManus and Mr. Bishop have resumed duties in the same positions as last year, and Miss Hosking has been permanently appointed to the staff of the primary school. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell Pearce have returned from a holiday spent at Titahi Bay. Miss Muriel Rolls left on Monday for Wellington, where she has been appointed probationer at the Clyde Quay School ALFREDTON. (“The Age” Special.) The Puketoi cricketers visited Alfredton last week-end and played the local club for the Burling Shields on the Domain, Alfredton winning the match by an innings, two wickets and 17 runs. Alfredton in their first innings made 207 for nine wickets and declared, B. McLellan being the highest scorer with 49. Puketoi made 47 in their first innings and, following on, made 43 in their second. L. Bours, with 16 runs, was the highest scorer for Puketoi. Harry Smith bowled well for Alfredton, taking nine wickets for 19 runs.
The contractor (Mr. G. McKenzie) is starting his metalling contract on Benton’s Line early next week. When this road is finished it will help in no small way to bring Alfredton residents nearer to Masterton, which is recognised by the people of these parts as their market town.
It is to be hoped that the Eketahuna County Council will soon commence the metalling of Barton’s Line. The loan for this worfc was raised some time ago and the work is still undone. Mr. and Mrs. Milne have returned to Alfredton after a motor tour of the North Island.
Mr. and Mrs,. Bennett are spending a holiday in the South Island.
