THE OAT SHORTAGE

It waa recently stated that a shortage of oats was being created in the Wairarapa owing to the fact that farmers were cutting their crops into oaten sheaf chaff, because qf the high prices ruling for this commodity. The Chairman of tho Ekotahuna County Council (Mr J. B. Carruthers) scoured the district on Tuesday in search of oats for the County teams. He found that very few oats were offering, and that a prohibitive price was being asked for those that were available. Mr Carruthers could not receive a lower quotation than 7s per bushel, which he refused to accept until consulting his fellow Councillors. Mr Carruthers was also commissioned to purchase several hundred tons of oaten sheaf chaff. He secured about a quarter of his requirements, and at £lO 17s 6d per ton. The average price asked was £ll 10s per ton.
