AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
The success of the Wairarapa representatives at the provincial amateur athletic championships at Wanganui on Saturday last will give much satisfaction to those residents of the district who take a pride in physiea? development. In amateur athletics we have a clean and wholesome sport—om of the few outdoor sports that aro not tainted with the gambling fever or the •lust for gain. The Wairarapa has fdj many years past produced champion? in* various forms of sport, and it if pleasing to note that the rising generation is worthily maintaining th< reputation that was gained by th< pioneers of the district. The Wai rarapa Amateur Athletic Club is tc .bo heartily congratulated upon having succeeded in retaining, that coveted trophy, the McVilly Shield. \:',
