Carterton

(From Oar Resident Beporter.) The circumstances as revealed at the inquest of the late Sergt. Wiley were such as to warrant the Railway Department seriously considering the granting of a compassionate allowance to the widow. have been made to Mr A. D. McLeod, M.P., and the general Itope is that he may be able to exert sufficient influence to move the Department to do its duty towards a helpless family bereft of its breadwinner. Mrs Wiley is certainly entitled to claim a widow's pension, but the amount is totally inadequate to meet the needs of six young children. Some of the settlers of Longbush were approached on Thursday and asked to contribute to the Soldiers' Memorial Square Fund, which is being established to provide a suitable memorial to those soldiers of the South Wairarapa County who made the supreme sacrifice in the great war. The canvassers received very encouraging support and were able to clear away certain misunderstandings that existed.

The development of the town fully warrants the Borough Council revising its by-lows in many directions. Buildings of a character calculated in time to prove a menace to the safety of the town are being erected in growing thoroughfares,, and other things are. obtaining which the controlling authority should invest itself with power to prevent.. A pleasant function took place at the Dalefield Public Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mr. Nightingale, who has been promoted to the charge of the Greytown District High School, was, with his wife, entertained by the settlers of tho district and presented with valuable parting gifts. Mr. J. Hodder, chairman of the School Committee, stated they had met together to say farewell to their esteemed friend and schoolmaster. Mr. Nightingale had been amongst them for eight or nine years, and ho had proved a worthy citizen, who assisted in anything promoted for the welfare of the district. They were sorry to lose him, but they were grateful to know that •his removal raearit promotion. At the last examination Mr. Nightingale bad presented eight pupils for proficiency certificates, and it was to his credit to say that all secured them. Mrs. Nightingale was also held in the highest esteem for her unstinted attention to thoso unfortunate enough to bo stricken with illness. He had pleasure, on behalf of the residents of the district in handing Mr. gale a solid silver tea sot as a mark of the esteem in wliich he and his wife were held. Mr. Standish endorsed the remarks of Mr. Hodder. Mr. Nightingale, in responding, thanked the people for their kindly thought and •>. the speakers for their remarks. He referred to the intelligence of the pupils who had passed through the classes at Dalefield, and said it was a Btrange coincidence that the day was the celebration of his birthday. TTiose present then rose and sang "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," and cheers were given. Master Crosland next handed Mrs. Nightingale a handsome handbag as a •gift from the school children. Afternoon tea was afterwards served. Harvest thanksgiving services are to be held in the Carterton and Gladstone Presbyterian Churches tomorrow. % Crossbred springing dairy heifers made up to £l4 17s 6d at the Carterton sale yesterday. They were sold on behalf of Mr. W. H. Booth, of "Middle 1 1!un. ,, , ' At a small gathering of officers of the Bowling Club yesterday morning, a testimonial and cheque were handed by the president (Mr. Davies) to the late caretaker, Mr. Wilde. At the monthly meeting of the Methodist Ladies' Guild, Mrs. Butler, sen, presented Mrs. Ward, wife of the Key, Mr. Ward, with a handsome silver epergne, as a token of appreciation for the many services rendered, in Church and other matters during her stay in Carterton.
