THE RAILWAY OFFICERS.
When the highly-paid Mr.Hiley left the Railway Service of New Zealand, wo suggested that it would be a costly affair to pay his successor £3OOO per year. The Government took no heed of the suggestion. Now we find that the railway officials generally are framing their ideas of salary upon that of the General Manager. That they are entitled to do so goes without saying. It is only a question of services rendered. If the General Manager is worth £3OOO per year, his assistant must be worth at least half that amount, and when relative officers are graded downward, no stationmaster should be receiving less than £4OO per year. This is how we work it out on paper. The Government works it out differently.
