PICTURE EXHIBITION
AT DRILL HALL,
The splendid collection ,of water colours, oil paintings, drawings, and original etchings on view at the Masterton Drill Hall is attracting quite a lot of attention. The pictures, which are both antique and modern,, are chiefly by English and Continental artists of repute, having been obtained by agents in Great Britain and parts of Europe. The original watercolours number 53, and cover a wide range of subjects, the greater number showing fine views of Englishe scenery.
Amongst the best are the following:—"The Path over the Moor," by David Bates, R.F.A.; "The Western Glory," by B. Fletcher; "Dutch Fisher Folk," by C. H. Campbell; "Evening Light," by W. Manners, R.8.A.; "Outward Bound," by Fred Elliott; "The Cornfields," by Herdman Smithj andga host of others too numerous to mention here.
There are twenty-one oils, including "The Old Philosopher," by Van der Velden; "Thinking 1 into the Future," by A. H. O'Keefe; "Ifainty Wares,'" by S. L. Thompson, who is now one of the leading artists in Paris; "The Rehearsal," by H, Byles, E.R.A., a beautiful piece of colour, graceful, and splendidly drawn; another excellent work is "The Favourite Model," by W. K. Williams. E.R.A. In addition, there is a rare collection of ink, pencil and wash drawings by Royal Academicans, Royal Institute and old masters, and some beautiful original etchings by celebrated artists,, both "antique and modern. Besides all this feast, of cultured art, there is an excellent and rare collection of war pictures taken at the front by celebrated ' French artists, which are being sold privately for,the benefit of the 55,000 blind soldiers of France.- The artists responsible for the works are- Steinlen; Louis Raemakers, Pulbot and Lucieh Jone*s; : Taking .the collection as a whole, there has probably "never been one in so .versatile and evenly good. The collection will be on view from 9 a.m. till 5.30 p.m. on Monday, and up to, 2.15 p.m. on Tuesday, Msrch 23rd, when a,sale, by auction of the pictures will take place. The auctioneer, will be Mr. A. J, Cooper. The sale offers an exceptionally rare opportunity of securing good pictures by genuine artists,"and there should be a good attendance.
