THE MOTHERLAND'S GIFT,
(By Electric Telegraph.-^CopyrigJit.) (Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.) Received Last Night, 9.40 o'clock. OTTAWA, March 20.
- It is understood that Lord Jcllicoo 's report, tabled in the Imperial House of Commons, shows that Great Britain is prepared to present to Canada a fleot which at pre-war prices would be worth 16,500,000 dollars. This'would include one light cruiser/ four torpedo boats, eight -patrol boats, one flotilla leader, eight submarines, and four mine sweepers.
Lord Jcllicoo recommends that Canada adopt a naval programme, which would cost, for the first year, some 5,800,000 dollars, of which 800,000 would bo used for new. ships,' and 500,000 on the maintenance of the fleet and the erection of defences.
The Government Party, at a caucus recently, decided against the adoption of any naval programme this year.
