FAILURE OF WATER SUPPLY.
MANY THRILLING ESCAPES
MONTREAL, December 29
During the temporary failure of the water system a fire broke out here and destroyed a block of houses and stores. The loss is estimated at half a million dollars. There were many thrilling escapes. The tiro stopped only after the extensive use of dynamite to destroy houses in the tire's path. The Canadian Pacific Railway Company's engine-shops are closing owing to the lack of water. Seven thousand men are idle.
