REDUCE TAXATION!
"Will you reduce taxation?" was a question asked of the Minister of Finance by Sir Joseph Ward) in the dying hours of the session. Will he reduce taxation ? The strike lias cost the country anything between £200,000 and £300,000. The crusade against small-pox cost it £25,000. The prolongation of Parliament through the' obstructive tactics of tho Opposition cost a similar amount. The demands for roads, and bridges, and railways, bave been enormous. The acquiring of land for the purposes of closer /settlement will involve a further outlay. To talk of reducing taxation in such circumstances is to trifle with a serious and perplexing situation. It is almost absurd as for the Red Feds, to ask for a reduction in the cost of living when they refuse to work and paralyse trade by remaining idle. If the Government is given a fair run it will reduce fjio taxation of the oountry, and the cost,of living as well.
