POSITION IN BRITAIN.
IS THERE A SHORTAGE?
(Received Last Night, 11.15 o clock.) LONDON, Decomber 16.
Lord Esher, as President of the London Territorials Association, complained that in the event of general mobilisation, every available horse would be required by thejlegulars, none being left for the Territorials. . Colonel Seely, Secretary for War, replied, denying the statement. He said that 140,000 horses would-be required for a general mobilisation, while the. latest census showed) that Britain has 460,000 suitable hbrses, which can be requisitioned. Colbiiei Seeley denied that foreign military purchasers were detrimental as, on the contrary, they encouraged breeders of light horses for artillery. Lord Esher replied that 518,794 horses and 151,781. mules and donkeys were used in the South African eattipaigp. He was unable to accept Colonel Seeley's comfortable assurances.
