O. N. GILLESPIE.

BEFORE THE COURT AT FEILDING. "Trustees Tile's ostaty v. Olhver Noel Gillespie. Call 01 liver Noel Gillespie." The words rang out in the clear, distinct voice of the Clerk at the Feikling sitting of the S.M. Court yesterday morning), when there was a packed room to witness the. much-discussed, event. Gillespie, smartly drcrsed, immediately walked, into the court, smiled and nodded pleasantly to the constable who had called him, but quick-' ly assumed a serious expression when he was brought face to face with the members of the bar. He was directed to a chair by Mr Graham, who appeared for him. . ' Mr Graham said lie was acting under instructions from Messrs Cooper and Rutherford, of Palmerston North, and he wished, to apply for a remand to Palmerston for the 19th inst. Mr Cooper hnd arranged with the police for accused to appear on that date, and he (Mr Graham) wished to place a. few facts before the court-. The accused had been arrested at Auckland, and the police admitted that he had cabled over from Sydney oh November 13th that he was coming back. He had been advised to come back, dnd would have reached here sooner but for the strike delaying the shipping. Accused had volunteered as a stoker on board a ship, and that had enabled the company to send the ship over. Gillespie had come back of his own free will. The police had been notified of the fact by Mr Cooper, and as the bail fixed by the Auckland Magistrate was very heavy, he had been instructed to ask for a reduction. "I admit," said Mr Graham, "it must be reasonable and substantial, but the present bail is very heavy, and I ask for a reduction." The Magistrate said the accused would be remandecl to Palmerston, to appear on the 19th. The same amount of bail would be fixed, no reduction being allowed oh the £2OOO. The same sureties were forthcoming.—Feilding Star.
