WOODYILLE RACES BIRKLINE WINS BIG EVENT (By Telegraph — Press Association.} '•WOODVILLE, Last "Night. The first day's racing of the W.oodville Jockey Club's summer meeting was held to-day under very adverse climatic conditions. It rained incessantly all day, and quickly the grounds in front of the tote and grandstand and in the saddling pad-* dock were covered in mud, and tho surroundings were very disagreeable. Notwithstanding.the heavy going the racing was interesting and exciting, and excellent times were registered* 'J.'he attendance was large and specu* lation good, the sum of £13,427 being handled on the totalisator, being £2537 better than the corresponding day last year. Auld-? eanled the field until entering 'the straight the first-time,, but Aberbrothock led past the stand. Rill joined the leaders in the straight, and soon settled matters . winning easily by four lengths. Rexer lost - his rider and Marble Head baulked. Time, 3min 32sec. The horses were .bunched coming into the straight. - Braeburn and St. Frances were the ( first to show out, then Immensity - came along strongly, and there was a great race to the post, Immensity winning-by two lengths, a length and a half separating the other two.
