(By Association.} WELLINGTON, Last Night. The House of Representatives went int(< committee to-night on the Counties Amendment Bill. In connection with the proposal to. give;' -County Councils tb6 power to erect workmen's ho jnesj it was agreed,, on tho suggestion; of: the. Premier,. 1 to extpncl■the: irea on which these homes cauld* be built to o acres of iten acres of land, and. twe nty acres * ihird-olasß land; * ; ';'• Mr H. Gf. Ell suggested' tliat consideration should be given to workmen in the shape of.a rebate, as under- the Workmen's Homes Act, "for the prompt payment of instalnients; but the Minister pointed out tliat this could riot fee datne, as the counties might not be able to borrow money on terms sufficiently advantageous to enable this to be done. . . ; The suggestion was, therefore, not pressed. Mr Russell moved a series of amendments enabling County Comtcils to do all though necessary tolight roads, streets, and public places in a county with gas. . The Minister indicated that ho could not accept the amendments, which were lost on the voices. The Bill was ,pa§sed ...._,....,
