BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present—His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. M. Coraaine), Crs. H. J. O'Leary, F. W. Temple, E. Flanagan, W. Candy, R. J. King, A. E. Winzenb' rg. Apologies for absence were received front Crs. W. R. Kemball and G. W. Sellar. The Government Auditor forwarded the audited balance-sheet for the year,, the- - same; being , received and ordered to be printed forthwith: The secretary of theV Masterton Picture and Entertainment Company wrote, asking that his company be treated as an industrial institution, and receive the concession granted by the council to consumers of 40,000 feet of gas.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Gas Committee. Messrs Thompson and Payne wrote, stating that the requirements of the Fire Inspector in regard to providing efficient lire escapes would receive immediate attention. —Received. The secretary of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust also wrote, stating fha£ the requirements of the Fire Inspector in regard to the Town Hall were receiving the attention of I the Trust, and the' work woxild be proceeded with at once.—Received. Seven ratepayers of Jean and Hacker streets . wrote, petitioning tho council to effect improvements to the footpaths in that locality.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the .Works Committee. * The Works and Finance Committee reported that a letter was received from Mr J. Loraas /in reference to the connection of Tararua and Wright streets with the sewerage system, and it was, resolved that the town clerk write to the Chief Health Officer asking his assistance in transfering the balance of the- Lincoln road drainage loan to help to do this work.

The reports of the Works and Finance, Gas and Abattoirs, and Park and Library Committees were read and adopted.
