Mr J. Hindmarsh (Napier) returned to Hawke's Bay on Monday, after spending Sunday in Masterton.
Mr E. J. Comer, of Te Awamutu, has been appointed stationmaster at Lower Hutt, in succession to Mr J. K. Harte, who retires shortly on superannuation. A wireless message has been received, intimating that Mr William Perry, of Masterton, will arrive at Auckland to-day in the Maheno, from Sydney. Messrs A. G. Pilmer (Maeterton), and Quinton Donald (Featherston), who have been judging light and draught horses at the Otago show, returned home yesterday. Mr F. L. Kenrick, of Wellington, will be temporarily in charge of the Pahiatua branch of the Bank of New Zealand until a successor to Mr G. A. Burgess has been appointed. Mr H. M. Campbell, assures the Hawke's Bay Herald that there is absolutely no foundation for the rumour that he does not intend contesting' the Hawke's Bay seat at the next general election.
Out of thirty-six applicants, the Feilding Borough Council appointed Mr W. R. Miller electrical engineer for the lighting and power ■■ system, which is to be installed immediately. Mr Miller is at present employed by the Wellington City Council.
Mr A. Havelock Green, who was at one time on the staff of the Age, and who has latterly been managirig-edi-tor of the Cambridge Independent, has accepted a responsible position on the staff, of a Christchurch paper. Mr A. A. Reese, formerly of Pahiatua, will fill the vacancy on the Independent staff. The fast-thinning ranks of old colonists have been further depleted by the death of Mrs David Strachan, who passed away at her borne, "Lornty," Wanß anu V <> n Saturday. The deceased lady, who had reached the advanced age of 88 years, was one of the oldest and most highly respected residents in the district. With her husband, the late Mr David Strachan,. she arrived in Wanganui in 1858, and after "residing in the" town for a short time, went to "Lornty," where she lived until the time of. her death
