THE OPAWA FIREMEN.
REFUSE DUTY AT SEA
AND ARE RE-ARRESTED
WELLINGTON, Last Night.
Fifteen firemen of the steamer Opawa appeared Magistrate's Court this morning, charged with absenting themselves from the ship without leave. Counsel said the men had intimated that they would not work if put aboard. Magistrate Riddell said the men were aware what the penalty would be if, on being placed on board, they disobeyed commands on the high seas. For the present offence they would be convicted and jseatenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, with a direction that if the vessel sailed before the expiry of the sentence they should be put on board. The firemen were returned to the Opawa, which left port on. the voyage to ; England. , She cleared the heads' at ope o'clock,' jmd; then; when' three or four miles out, was., observ-. Ed 'to turn and head back for port. About three o'clock the Opawa anchored in the stream, and a .police launch went out, and fourteen men were placed , under arrest.
