LINGTON.

A SOUTHERN REPORT CON-

TRADICTED.

(By Tdtgravh—Pra* Auociation.) WELLINGTON. Last Night. Work proceeded expeditiously and uninterruptedly on the wharves today, inward and outward cargo being handled at twenty vessels. The new Watersiders' Union has now a membership of about 1700, and 1200 men were working to-day.

Besides oversea and coastal .ships, the Lyttelton ferry steamer Wahine was taking in cargo, indicating that this trade is nearing normal conditions.

The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters has donated £IOO to the Strikers' Distress Committee.

It is stated to-day that the Attor-ney-General (Hon. A. L. Herdman) contradioted the report from Christchurch that 300 special constables are to be sent fron Christohurch to tibe West Coast, and ho says that no authority has been given for the dispatch of specials. Since the special constables were accommodated at Mount Cook, Permanent Artillery men have been doing duty as guards. They have now been relieved of this work, which will be done by the special constables.
