Sir-James Carroll, M.F., who is nutw completely restored to health, is at present on a. visit to the West Goast districts of the North Island. Mr Robert Gu.th.rie, of Momt Nessiiig, is stated to have received .numerous requests asking him to become a candidate in the Liberal interests for the Waitaki seat at the next general election.
The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mis Maskroy, a resident of Bannister Street. The deceased, who was fifty-two years of age, had been an inmate of the hospital for some time. A Timaru telegram states that Mr H. Gourley, of the Post Office staff, who is retiring after forty years' service, was presented by the staff with a silver tea and coffee service and a case of pipes. Chief Postmaster Kissel! made the presentation, and his ouloigy of Mr Gourley's services wa.s endorsed bv other *nembcvs of the staff.
Mr *VV. Howard Booth, of Carterton who has been captain in charge; of a patrol squadron of Wairarapa specials during the last few weeks, was on Saturday presented by his comrades with a case of Barling pipes and a tobacco pouch, in recognition of the consideration he has always shown for the men tinder his command. Mr Archibald McLcod, senior partner in tho firm of McLeod, Weir, and Hopkirk, sawmi'.lers, Wellington, died at his residence in Austin Street, on Saturday, aged 74. The deceased gentleman was born at Helensborouph, on the Lower Clyde, and had been in New Zealand for 50 years, having arrived in Dunedin in 1863.
