THE BY-ELECTION.
Five nominations have been received for the vacant Lyttelton seat. Three of the candidates are standing in the interests of the Opposition, one for Reform, and one in the Social-Demo-cratic interest. It seems almost a certainty, if these five go to the poll, that the Reform candidate will be in the second ballot, though what the final result will bo will depend largely upon the elements that are. at work
in the electorate. There is more than a possibility, with three Oppositionists in the'held, that the Social-Dem-ocratic candidate will reach the second ballot. It will then bo for the Opposition to decide whether it will support law and order, as represented by'the Government, or militancy, as represented by the nominee of the Federation, of Labour. The decision of tho Opposition on this point.would be a determining factor in a great many electorates at the general election next year.
