RELIGION IN SCHOOLS.

During the debate on the Education Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives last week, the member for Wairau moved an amendment which, if passed, would have enabled School Committees to permit tho.imparting of religious instruction in school hours for half-an-hour in each week. The proposal was rejected by the House, without a division being taken. This may, or may not, be accepted as an indication that Parliament is averse to the disturbance of tho present secular system of education. It is, at anyrate, an emphatic indication by the representatives of the people that they art; not prepared to adopt a system that would make the question of religion the deciding factor at all School Committee elections, and would create local heartburnings that should be avoided. Wo congratulate Parliament upon having rejected such an unwise and ill-considered proposal.
