Councillor 1). Hughes has been reelected chairman of the Woodvillo County Council. Mr John Marshnian, one of the earliest settlers of Canterbury, died at Christchurch on 4 Monday. Tho death occurred on Monday at the Greytown Hospital of Mr James Addie, at the, age of 73 years. Councillor William Perry was yesterday re-elected chairman of the Wairarapa South County Council. Mr Samuel G. Ferguson has been unanimously elected chairman of the Westland County Council .—Preas Association. The death is announced by cable of Sir Rdbert Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge University. Mr C. Watson, who has been beadmaster of tho Te Aro school for a number otf years, is retiring at the end of January next. Mr G. H. Baker has resigned his position of borough overseer at Gisborne, having been appointed to a fibular position at Ohakune. Mr W. J. Bardsloy, secretary of the Timaru Harbour Board, has been appointed secretary of the Otago Harbour Board, from thirty applicants. Mr H. J. Satchell, Royal New Zealand Artillery, was married on Tuesday at St. John's Cathedral, Napier, to Miss Fredericka Hamshar, of Napier. Lieut.-Col. Fisher, late chief secretary oil the Salvation Army in New Zealand, has been appointed chief secretary of the London social work, under Joommissiomer Sturgess. .Mr J. B. Laurenson, brother of the late member, is announced aa the official . Liberal candidate for the Lyttelton seat. He is President of the Christchurch Industrial Association. Mr W. H. James, son of Mr E. A. James, General Secretary of the Political Reform League, is at present in Masterton in the interests of the league'a publication, "Light and Liberty." The Wellington Education Board has accepted the resignations of Mrs Maynard, sole teacher at the Saunders' Road school (Alfredton), and of Mr J. I. S. Mackenzie, solo teacher at Miki Miki Valley school. - Mr James Moncrieff has resigned his position as clerk to the Carterton Borough Council, owing to pressure of other business. Mr Moncrieff has to continue in office until March 31st.The remains of the late Mrs Pickering, wife of Mr Bert. Pickering, wero interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral cortege was large and represen-. tntive, and included members of the local Order of Druids. Mr G. A. Burgess, manager of the Pahiatua branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transfeired to Hawera. During his several years' residence in Pahiatua. Mr Burgess has taken an active interest in educational and social matters, and his. departure will be very much regretted. Mr Morgan Thomas, who died at Fitzroy, a suburb of New Plymouth, on Sunday morning, was for some trne in the drapery trade in Napier, but on retiring from business a -dozen year's ago he went to reside in New Plymouth, where his niece, Miss Pickering, his only other relative in the Dominion being Mrs Pickering (Auckland). ,s £ Another of the early colonists passed away on Tuesday morning in the person ctf Mrs Anne Snow, who with her parents arrived in Nelson by the ship Indus in the year 1843. Mrs Snow was the eldest daughter of Mr Robert McNab, who was among the earliest settlers in tho Riwaka district, Nelson. The deceased leaves a huoband and two; sons and two daughters. At the statutory meeting of the Masterton County Council, held at noon yesterday,* Councillor W. J.» Welch was unanimously re-elected chairman for another term. Councillors Miller, Patchet't and Beetham referred- in eulogistic terms to the fairness, uprightness and publicspiritedness of tho chairman. Councillor Welch, in acknowledging the compliment paid him, said he realised his own shortcomings, and would have been glad to have aeen another Councillor filling the chair. He appreciated the confidence reposed in him by the Council, and the kind sentiments that had been expressed. He had now been elected to the chair for four terms, and lie was pleased to saythat he always felt that he had the sympathy and co-operation of'his felklw Councillors. He trusted that the good relations that had existed in the past would Continue during xx co-ning year.
