RESULTS OF PARTY.
One of the .moot regrettable features of party government, as we know it in New Zealand, is ' that it creates hypocrisy .and verbosity on the one side, and timfdity and dumbness on the other. The present session of Parliament has afforded a painful illustration of what we mean. From the Opposition side of the House there has come a flood of incoherent and meaningless rhetoric, which has, been neither 'edifying nor instructive. Utterly ignorant of the true functions of the "outs" have set theinsefves the task of blocknig every measure of importance that has come before the Hous©. On the other band, Government members have sat as mute and stolid as the Sphynx. &ome of them have not opened their mouths during the whole session, for the apparent reason that they were instructed not to do so. Surely this is ;not creditable to our legislative institution. On the one hand, we are creating political hypocrites, and. on the.other political mummies. The sooner a more rational system is discovered,. the better will it be for ■ Parliamentary representatives, and the better for the countrv.
