ATTEMPT TO BURN A RAILWAY BRIDGE. (By Telegraph—Pres* Association.) PALMERSTON, N., Last Night. Shortly after 3.30 o'clock on Sunday morning, what appears to have been a deliberate attempt to burn the railway bridge over the Manawatu river at Longburn was discovered. The fire was first observed by the driver of the Auckland express. Flames were noticed coming up between the sleepers at the northern end of the bridge. The train was immediately pulled up, and the fire, which -had not. obtained a good hold, was immediately extinguished. The damage vas slight. There is enough evidence to show that the fire was not the result of an accident, as materials had been collected for tho purpose of starting the fir.e.
