STATE FERRY SERVICE.
If the present industrial crisis has done nothing else, it has emphasised the necessity for the Government establishing a State ferry sen-ice between the North and South Islands. It is somewhat remarkable that the so-called "Liberal" Government during tho twenty yeans that it held the reins of office, sot its face against any movement in .the direction of nationalising this service. s Tt is only now, when tho Reform Party has heavy financial obligations imposed upon it through the bungling of its predecessors, that the "Liberal" newspapers of the Dominion discover the hiportance of an uninterrupted service, controlled by the State, between tho two Islands. We have no doubt that when the proper time arrives—probably when the railway connection between Christchurch and Picton has been established —the Government will establish a ferry service between Wellington and Pioton. In the meantime the experience of the strike will serve to stimulate public interest in an undertaking that has a very considerable bearing upon the maintenance of'the transport system of the Dominion.
