A SCHEME THAT FAILED.

The Labour Federation, by "calling off" the strike of Arbitration Unions in Auckland, has admitted that its clumsy atte-npt to precipitate a gen* era! strike and paralyse the trade of the country has utterly failed. The excuse that the men are going back to work so that they can contribute towards keeping the sectional strike alive is altogether too thin. Men who have been out of work for a month to please the ■ Federation of "Labour, and whose house rent is in arrears, are just the sort of people to contribute towards keening the transport workers idle. The strike is now ended, so far as the North Island is concerned, for the transport services have practically been restored to normal, and are likely to remain stf. What purpose the leaders of the unhappy out-of-works hope to serve bv continuing their present attitude, *it is difficult to say. The longer the old watersiders and drivers remain idle, the leas chance they have of finding employment. The sodner they repudiate their and get to work, the better for all concerned. The Federation of Lal>our has exhausted" its power for doing harm, has impoverished its members, and te utterly discredited as a political and social factor.
