POULTRY NOTES.
(|Jy Utilitarian.) The newly-formed directorate of the K.Z. Poultry Industries, Ltd., Co., lias been widelv represented, the following .districts having now got members on the board: Lower.Hutt, JSelson, Motueka, Palmerston N., Masterton and Vfohnsonville. Operations are now going and the company is prepared to accept live poultry (in crood condition.) as well as eggs, provided a couple, of days' notice is given. That and Motueka egg supplies have a. decided effect on the Wellington, egg market has been demonstrated Q? late, for no sooner did the boats stop running across, when up rose the price, aiuhnow, eggs are rolling in, hundreds of cases at a time, and this, coupled with, the disorganised state of trade in general, has brought the price down to even'
less than one shilling. Wellington, is notorious for its variety of prices for eggs, but what the'writer say last Wednesday is, we hope, hard to beat. In the same street one shop had them marked up at Ud\ another at Is 2d and .a third at le 4d. The. variation in pnces, hitherto, has been in different localities, but nil in one street, makes one wonder why? ; . . In selecting cockerels for breeders from this season's chicks, it is wiser to pick them from the earlier hatched ones than late, in order that they may have time to become fully matured by next breeding .season. Late hatched breeders are apt to throw weakly stock, and they, in. turn, are prone to repeat the offence. Those selected should have rings put on their legs, which can be obtained at almost any ironmonger's, ana, then, if they do"happen-tb"get out of their pen, they can easily be traced again. ' There'are many varieties on the market, plain flat ones, with or without numbers on them, besides spiral rin«»s in different colours. The latter arc-Toohvenient as the various colours render them easier to know your particular birds at a distance. As each incubator is finished with for the year, it should be thoroughly washed''out with some disinfectant, and the door of the machine left wide open for some days, to let it get properly drv again. The same care should be taken with the lamps, they receiving a good scrubbing, both inside and out. The burners need removing arid can be well cleaned by using a tooth brush, which will clear all tlie small holes, some of which Are-'almost sure to have become clogged witli dust, No less than three of the Board of the N.Z. Poultry Industries Company are accountants. Some are actively engaged in business, while all are enthusiastic poultry keepers,-a- sine qua non. With men of thu calibre, matters should n.nke rapid progress.
