FEDERAL LAND TAX.
MENTIONED AT A COMPANY MEETING. STRONG BUT UNAVAILING REMONSTRANCES. 'Timet' —'Sydney Sun' Special Cables. (Received -Ndv. 17, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 16. At the annual meeting of the Scot-tish-Australian Investment Company, Mr John Harley said that £20,818 paid in 1912 in colonial taxation, the bulk being Federal land tax. The amount equalled,a dividend of 4 per cent, on ordinary capital, and had been levied on all freehold properties, whether reproductive or not. The taxation exceeded anything that coald be termed reasonable. Strong remonstrances ihad been .made to the Government, but had been unavailing. Only one cdurse remained; to sell all freehold on which the Federal land tax was levied. This would, take time. They would find other outlets for their capital, because Australia, with all its faults of government, was a great country, with a future before it.
