Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., visited various parts of liis electorate on Saturday, leaving again for Wellington yesterday morning. A London cable states tiiat- the Rt, Hon. Mr O'Brien, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, lias resigned his position owing to ill-health. Mr O. Peaoh, cliief railway clerk at Palmer,ston, has been transferred to New Plymouth as stationmaster. Mr Peach was for several years m charge of the Featlierston railway station. Mr S. Burton, Government Veterinarian, who has been transferred from Gisborne to Wellington, was presented by the settlers of Poveity Bay on Saturday last with a wellfilled purse of sovereigns. Mr Burton was in Masterton some years back and was exceedingly popular among the settlers. Mr Harry Croad, sen., a well-known settler of Ballance, and at one time borough overseer in Masterton, met with a painful accident a few days ago. He was driving to his home, when his gig came into collision with the handrail of a small bridge. He was thrown heavily to the ground, and was considerably cut about, the face, besides sustaining severe bruises. At a meeting of the Holstein Breeders' Association of New Zealand, held during the Palmerston show, a resolution was passed making Mr Coleman Phillips a life meirber of the association in recognition or the great work he had done in connection with the introduction and advancement of the Holstein breed ot cattle. Mr Newton King proposed the motion and Mr Lovelock seconriea it,.-and it was rarrie 1 amid enthusiastic applause. The friends of Mr John Shaw, of Bannister Street, Masterton, will learn with deep regret of the death rtf his wife, which occurred at the residence yesterday. The deceased lady, who was only 36 years of age. had been ailing for some months, and had been operated on for appendicitis. She leaves, a family of two children to mourn their loss, and irnuch sympathy will be felt for them in their sad bereavement. The funeral will leave the residence, 82 Bannister Street, at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon for the Masterton cemetery.
