OBITUARY.
MR. DAVID CREWE. ,
It is wiih' deep regret thai, we record the deatli'of Mr David Crewe,, Mayor of Pahiatua, 'which occurred on Monday uight/last, after a long and painful illness. Mi* Crewe, who was sixty years of age, was )>ora at Dudley, Worcestershire, his father being a manufacturer of iron and a colliery proprietor in ,the Midland Counties. Coming to .New Zealand in 1877, tho deceased resided in Master ton for a period, and was engaged in the dairying 'industry.'. • : When tb'c Forty-Mile Bush was opened up in 1884, he, with a number of other enterprising Mastertomans, proceeded to Pahiatua, where lie successfully conducted one of the first hotels in that township. Ho subsequently entered into the auctioneering arid land agency business; and was eminently ■successful in all his dealings. He tool* a great interest in the public affairs of Pahiatua, having served no less than.nine years as Mayor. His had been chairman of the Pahiatua Road Board and Town Board, He was 'also a member of the "Wairarapa North and Pahiatua County Councils, and ih.ad served on the School Committee, Hospital Committees;, Licensing Bench, Cemetery Trust, and Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. He was also a Justice of the Peace. There was not; a public institution in the Forty-Mile Bush with which She was "not closely identified. Full of energy, a man of progressive and original ideas, ancl enterprising withal, ho rendered yeornian service to the' district in which, he resided for so imany years. He was twice married, his first wife dying in 1896. He leaves a widow and • one son—Mr J. D. C. Crewe, who is * a valued member off the Pahiatua. Borough Council.
