MAORI GETS AWAY.
CLOSING OF, HOTELS
WELLINGTON, Lasi Night. The Lyttelton ferry steamer Maori goi> away soon * affer 8 o' clock, without* any trouble. ■ -, " ' Captain Manning, when; seen, said he anticipated no trouble with the firemen, of whom there was a full complement. Some of the -firemen from the Wahine stood about, saying unkind things about the Maori s men's.- One of the Maori's firemen, when asked if. there* was any likelihood of their following the Wahine men's example, replied "Not on your life. "Belcher's the man we're following!", ... The Licensed Victuallers Association met this afternoon, and expressed their willingness to fall in with any request by the authorities for the closing of hotel bars in the c-ase of disturbances. The executive of the New Zoaland Alliance met to-day and passed a resolution urging • the authorities to stop the sale of liquor, to prevent a recurrence of last night's' disorder. The Mayor stated to-night that as Mayor he'had taken action with another J.P,, and- requested the closing of seven "hotels en route between the city and Newtown Park. These are the Cambridge, Caledonian, Tramwav, Royal Tiger, Prince of Wales, Victoria, and Cricketers Arms. All were closed at 7.30 p.m., and others will be closed, if necessary.
