THE LICENSING ACT.

ALLEGED BREACHES. Several charges under the Licensing Act were investigated at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Masterton yesterday, over which Mr L. G. Reid, S.M., presided. William Rooderkirk was charged on two counts of having sold liquor for sale at Alfredton. Mr P. li. Hollings appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty. From the statement .made by the Sergeant of Police it appears that two constables stayed at Rooderkirk's boarding house on October 4th, and saw beer sold openly. The constables purchased some beer. Later the police searched the house and found 14 bottles of whisky, >two cases of whisky and a small cask with a little beer in it.

I His Worship inflicted a fine of £3O 1 on one charge of selling liquor, and convicted accused on the other two charges. Horace Flaws was charged with having kept liquor for sale, and with attempting to deliver liquor. Mr M. Lavery appeared for the accused. The evidence of the police was to the effect that on October 22nd, Constable Penson intercepted and seized some liquor (six dozen bottles of beer and two dozen bottles of whisky), which accused was bringing into Masterton in a motor car. Foil" the defence, evidence was given that the accused wa3 in the employ of Mr Petlierick, of Mastert6n, and had brought the liquor, which, was to be delivered at Fernridge outside the no-license area, -under the latter's instruction. The charge of attempting to deliver liquor for sale-was dismissed, without prejudice, and that of having kept liquor for sale was dismissed. Sven Polsen was charged with having forwarded liquor to Masterton without having attached a label thereto, the liquor having been that seized by the police in PetLerick's car. Mir M. Lavery appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence, His Worship inposed a fine of £lO and costs. On the application of Sergeant Miller, Mr Re-id decided to allow the { liquor to be retained in the charge of the police, the Sergeant stating that he intended to take proceedings against Petherick.
