SIR JOSHUA WILLIAMS.
HONOURED AT WELLINGTON
(By TsUgraph. — Prat Auociation.) WELLINGTON, Last Night.
There was a notable array of legal talent at the Supreme Court to-day to do honour to Sir Joshua Williams to mark his elevation to the Privy Council. Fully a hundred members of the bar were present. On behalf of the bar, the Attorney-General, the Hon. A.L. Herdman, congratulated Sir Joshua on the honour and distinction conferred on him by the King. The appointment, he said, marked an epoch in the history of the administration of justice in New Zealand. Sir Joshua had managed in some wonderful way to master the •secret of gaining the confidence, of the people, and had left behind him an example which all should emulate. In replying, Sir Joshua said 1 he was profoundly moved by such a large assembly, but the Attorney-General had said'a groat deal too. much respecting his services to the State. It was an honour because it carried with it corresponding duties and New Zealand's representative would take part in the deliberations of the Judicial Committee for the first time. He hoped his appointment would pave the way for. those members of the New Zealand judicial bench when they had retired to take up sitting duties. He was retiring "because the long and constant sittings were getting too much for him. He hoped before his death to return to the Dominion.
