NEW ZEALAND LOAN.
OPERATIONS OF UNDERWRITERS. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONDON, Oct. 18. New Zealand scrip is quoted at ten shillings discount. The Daily Telegraph says it is doubtful whether the underwriters arc really being, saddled with such heavj liabilities as ar& apparently the case. There is reason to believe that the investors themselves are frequently the guarantors or so-called underwriters. Undoubtedly the insurance companies and other big corporations take advantage of the underwriters commission to secure the amounts they want.at a cheaper rate, but purely for investment. The Economist declares that members of the Stock Exchange are slightly amused at the idea of a boycott, considering it well nigh impossible to carry out such a thing effectively. But they acknowledge the calculations that a mere threat may be of some uso in stemming the torrent in regard to' the new issue.
