A STORY OF BLACKMAIL. JUSTIFICATION PLEADED. (Received October 15, 11 a.m,> LONDON, October 14. The libel case Robert Sievier v. Percy Bono, a solicitor, and Thomas Dey, a bookmaker, for circulating a typewritten sheet alleging tliat Sievier has blackmailed Dey for £IOOO in connection with an advertisement published in Sievier's paper the Winning Post, has commenced. The charge is a criminal one. Accused were committed for trial in June last. Bono pleaded justification. The prosecuting counsel stated that the Winning Post in 1907 refused Dey's advertisements, hut that after an interview these were accepted, Dey paying Sievier £309 for one advertisement. Sievier denied that Dey, gave him another £7OO, which he (Dey) had specially fetched from the bank .in gold and handed over in the presence of Edward Sievier, a cousin of Robert's, who died in January last. After this, Robert Sievier and Dey became political associates at Hoxton, Dey being a candidate for a seat on the County Council. Cross-examined, Sievier admitted that Dey had several times lent nim money* They hadi considerable betting transactions. Sievier said that after a quarrel in 1913 he again refused to accept advertisements, ?«nd Dey and Bono then circulated a hbel among the Hoxton electors. Sievier incidentally stated that his betting account for eight months was £IOO,000.
