MAYORAL ELECTIONS.
It is disappointing to find that the Statutes Revision Committee of the House of Representatives has struck out that clause in the Municipal Corporations Bill which provided for the election of Mayors by the Borough Councils. We are satisfied that the protest made against the clause in question oamo largely from interested persons, and did not represent the true public sentiment. However, the Cbnpnittee of the House lias yielded to the pressure brought upon it from without, and hag substituted a clause providing for the election of Mayor every two years, instead of annually. This is a small step hi the direction of reform, and if it passes the House it may ultimately lead to a demand from the' burgesses that they be permitted to elect only the Councillors, leaving the Council to choose its own chairman, as other local bodies are privileged to do.
