The members of the Excelsior Hockey Club held a successful smoke social in the Foresters' Lodge-room on Tuesday evening. The chair was occupied by Mr A. C. Pragnell, and there was a large attendance of members audi ex-members of the Excelsior Club . Several toasts were honoured, arid a number of musical items were rendered. During the evening, Mr A. C. Williams, on behalf of the Excelsior members, presented the captain, Mr. A. C. Pragnell, with a silver cigarette case. In making the presentation Mr Williams referred to tlie splendid work done by Mr Prng- . noil in the interests of hockey. The recipient suitably acknowledged the presentation.

Rates amounting to £1675 14s 9d have been received by the Masterton County Council during the past month. "" The County Council ranger seized thirty-nine head of cattle, thirty horses, and two sheep on the County roads during last month. Two amounts of "conscience money" were received by the Treasury last month both on behalf of the Railway Department, being in lots of £2 and 5s respectively. There is a great scarcity of boy labour all over the Dominion. In one issue of the "Christchurch Press" no fewer than fifteen boys were wanted in Christchurch alone. During the hearing of an affiliation case at the Invercargill Police Court a young woman aged twenty-three stated that she was the mother of three illegitimate children. The Chief Postmaster stated at Pongaroa last week that tenders were to be called for an alternate tri-weekly mail service between Pahiatua and Pongaroa and Eketahuna and Pongaroa. The All Blacks will meet Starford University to-day in the fourth match of l the Californian tour The New Zealanders have already totted up eighty points against their opponents' nil. Four male and three female members of the Masterton branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade will Fe .in attendance at the Opaki races tomorrow. A special ambulance tent, has been arranged on the, course., The Masterton County Council decided yesterday, on the motion of Cr. Patchett to call'for tenders for the erection of the first bridge on the Hutewai road, provided that everything is in order. At the- meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday, it was decided, on the motion of Cr. Patchett, that finger-posts be erected where required in the County. Cr. Patchett stated that there were,a number of roads in the Alfredton district that needed finger-posts.
The tender or Mr Martin Kerins, at £9B 10s, was yesterday provisionally accepted by the Masterton County Council for forty chains of metalling on the Paulsen's road. One tender was received for widening and metalling the Blairlogie road, but it was declined, as it was considered too high. The clerk to the Masterten 'County Council stated yesterday, in answer, to Cr. Cross, that the engineers motor-car had now been given twelvemonths' trial. It had been licensed on September 28th, 1912. 'Cr. Cross intimated his intention of giving notice of motion- on the subject for the next meeting of the Council. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., who held an inquiry in Ma-sterton last week;, has decided upon the evidence placed before him that Mr B; Douglas is k fit and proper person to hold a publican's license, and has issued a. certificate of. fitness accordingly. A further extension of a-month has been granted to the sub-committee set up by the Masterton County Counicl to report upon the desirability, of procuring, a stone-crushing plant .'"Or'.'- Beetham stated at yes- | terday's meeting of the Council that the committee had secured a lot of information, but it had not yet been able to arrive at a decision. The Masterton County Council has received advice from the Advances to Settlers' Board', provisionally approving of loans of £3OO for the Wainuiomapu road, £3OO for the Glendonald Waii;ere road, and £I6OO for .the Al-fredton-Weber road .- As the raising of these loans is contingent, upon Government grants appearing upon tthe Estimates, the Council yesterday decided to defer action for a month. "Pahiatua-still has license; Eketahuna hasn't," was a cuft remark passed near the conclusion, of the meeting of Pongaroa residents on Friday evening when the merits of Pahiatua and Eketahuna were being dis-, cussed as to which was the better town for the Pongaroa mail terminus; "The postscript seems the most important of all," jokingly rejoined the Chief Postmaster (Mr A. P. Dryden\ a remark which caused -considerable! laughter.'
\ Some- time: ; ago the Mastertoh County Council purchased a road gra_ der, atva cost of £74 ss, for use in the Alfredton and Upper Taueru Ridings. It was understood that the cost would be borne by the two ridings. Cr. Patchett mentioned at yesterday's meting of the Council that the cost of the grader, which had not proved satisfactory, had.fallen upon the Alfredton Riding. Ho thought that accounts should be squared, and that the Upper Taueru Riding shoulcl bear its cost of the burden.' The matter was refer red to the Finance Committee. At a meeting of the Board of Man-, agounent 0 f je Y.M.CiA., held in Mastertbn on Monday evening, it was decided, on the motion of Mr C. E. Daniell, "That the Y.M.O.A. having failed to satisfactorily command the support of those for whom it was primarily organised in Masterton, it is desirable to close the institution' and wind up affairs." An amendment, by Mr R. Sutherland, "That it be a recommendation to the members of the Association to sell the Gymnasium, pay off the overdraft, and continue the work," failed to find a seconder. A special meeting of members and of subscribers to the Association will be held on October 23rd, to consider the position.

He wasl taken into Mr lorns' house and Dr. Prior was" summoned. His /injuries were dressed, and yesterday morning , Mr Wood was removed to the Masterton Hospital. An examination of his arm by'the X-Rays revealed: the fact that he had sustained a fracture near the elbow. It is hoped that he will be able to get about in the course of a few days. A meeting of the Masterton Workers Mutual Benefit Building Seciety was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Messrs R. Krahageri (in the chair), J. W. Gordon, A. K. Johnson, A. Gardner, A. Cambourne, G. Hyde, T. S. Cresswell, and J. P. Prentice. The treasurer reported a cerdit balance of £lO4 4s 7d. It was decided to increase the secre--tary's salary in accordance with re-' commendations made at the annual meeting. In reference to the formation of a new society, the secretary was instructed to write to Wellington, Auckland, Gisborne and other, kindred societies, and make inquiries as to the method and forniation of different groups, and as to' whether the business is conducted by one set of directors or separate boards, and when the information is received the chairman to call a special meeting of directors to draw np a prospectus to be submitted to the public. The Waikato Winter Show Association waa charged yesterday with a breach of the Gaming Act in raffling a motor car in connection, with the recent show, by which they made a profit of £I4OO. The association relied upon the word "specimen' in v • clause 43 of the Act as justification I for the raffle. The Magistrate, however, held that a motor car was not a bona fide "specimen" of agriculture, horticulture, or poultry. A fine of £5 Is was imposed, with costs £2 Is. The members of the Municipal and Citizens' Band turned up in force laet evening to meet a committee set op by the Borough Council. The Mayor, who presided, made it quite clear that he was in no way hostile U the bands, and showed that while he did not think it advisable, or good business, to advise the council to subsidise the two bands, he was still of opinion, if the bands would amalgamate, they could produce a band of instrumentalists of which the citizens of Masterton would be proud, and he would use his best endeavour i to get the council to grant them as big a subsidy as he possibly could. If was finally resolved that the two ■ bands meet on Friday night next, with the ooject of paying the, way for amalgamation, and later on to ask His Worship to convene another meeting when the financial side of "" the matter could be thoroughly gone into.
