BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS AGITATION.

The. olwgy of New Zealand will not be to Maoae if a referendum is not taken on like question of introducing the Bible to the State schools of "this country. They are agitating the question for all it is worth. I.t is

significant, however, that while the clerical element of the community are I so enthusiastic over the question, the general public is> conspicuously silent and indifferent, One would think that, if the issue were regarded as of supreme importance, it would be enthusiastically taken up by the public. The fact that there is no enthusiasm whatever in the cause, shows clearly that there is a feeling against the present system of education being disturbed. It is unfortunate that those who'are opposed to the introduction of the religious element into ou* schools have not been as aggressive as that section of the clergy which is demanding a referendum. It must be remembered, however, that while the clergy are maintained by the public, and presumably have leisure time at their disposal, private individuals cannot afford to stump the country in defence of the education system.
