EARL GREY EXPLAINS. OPPOSITION TO HOME RULE. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONDON ,October 11.
Earl Grey, explaining his opposition to Home Rule, said the present scheme differed widely from Ca&ada's because it is based on the assumption that Ireland is a separate nationality. If the people of Irela<nd have the right of refusing to be governed from London the people of Ulster are entitled to refuse to be governed from Dublin. The population of the North-east corner of Ulster, he said, exceeded seven out of nine Canadian the whole of New Zealand, or twenty-one out of the forty-nine of the States of America. It would be a crime to compel Ulster to, accept Dublin rule. Lord Beaconsfield and the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain favoured the application of the Federal principle to Ireland, and agreed that the Unionists should accept Mr Churchill's invitation to seriously consider the Federal solution, which is within the field of practical politics.
