FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
NARROW ESCAPE OF INMATES
{By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night.
Shortly before 4 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in a large wooden private liotfcel in Ingesfcre Street, adjoining the Brunswick Hotel. It evidently originated in the main aitting room on the ground floor. A strong southerly wind fanned the flames, making the work of the brigade extremely difficult. Fortunately the fire was oonfined to the private hotel, which, with the exception of one end, was destroyed. The shingle roof of another, lodging house adjoin-: ing caught alight, but by cutting a hole in the Tipper portion of the building and pouring in a large quantity of water, the danger .was soon over. Everyone in the private hotel had a narrow escape, and lost everything. Mr and Mrs E. Bushby, the lessees, and their three children, were nearly suffocated. An elderly boarder found means of escape cut off, and was got out by firemen with the aid of a ladder.
Another man tried to get but by the back windotw, but was beaten back by the flames, and clambering over the roof scrambled down the fire escape, which was almost red tot, Burning his hands badly.
The building destroyed is owned by the Iraxford estate and is insured in the Commercial Union for £I7OO. The furniture is covered by a policy of £SOO in the New Zealand Company. Bushby's personal effects were not insured.
